Entrepreneurship Is... | Dr. Nikeya Young x Rodney Young, Jr. | VLS Podcast Ep 91

Y'all, we are BACK with Season 9 of the Victorious Living Solutions podcast, and I couldn't be more excited to dive into our theme: KINGDOM BUSINESS!

In our kickoff episode, my husband Rodney and I get into a juicy discussion about what entrepreneurship really is. Not the glossy Instagram version, but the real, gritty, sometimes frustrating reality of building something from nothing.

When Auntie Tabitha Dropped Some Truth

Recently, Tabitha Brown caused quite a stir online when she lovingly told struggling entrepreneurs, "You need to go get a job, baby." Some folks took offense, but I'm firmly on Team Tabitha! Her message wasn't for everyone - it was specifically for those who've been struggling for a long time, have good ideas but poor execution, and are robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Listen, there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with supplementing your entrepreneurial journey with employment. In fact, it might be exactly what God is calling you to do in this season.

The Kingdom Difference

What separates Kingdom business from regular entrepreneurship? As Rodney perfectly put it: "The regular entrepreneur is the master of everything... The kingdom entrepreneur is submitted."

That's the whole truth right there! When you're building a Kingdom business, you're not the boss - God is. This means:

  • Your business belongs to Him, not you

  • You follow His direction, even when it doesn't make sense

  • You stay in integrity, even when it's hard

  • You value stewardship over profit

Our Personal Journeys

Rodney shared how he's been an entrepreneur since age 9 (cutting grass to buy video games!), but has moved between full-time entrepreneurship and employment several times. Each time, following God's leading brought unexpected blessings - skills, connections, and growth he wouldn't have found otherwise.

I opened up about my journey as a mompreneur, homeschooling our kids while building Victorious Living Solutions. Recently, God led me to become an adjunct professor - something I initially resisted because I wanted a remote job! But His plan was so much better than mine, and I now see how this position is perfectly aligned with my purpose.

Why Entrepreneurship is NECESSARY

I made a bold statement that might ruffle some feathers: entrepreneurship is NECESSARY. Not because everyone needs to quit their job and start a business tomorrow, but because in these increasingly challenging times, God doesn't want His people wholly dependent on systems that may reject them.

With over 300,000 Black women recently pushed out of corporate America, we need to create opportunities for ourselves and each other. That doesn't mean every Christian needs to be a business owner, but we do need Kingdom-minded entrepreneurs creating companies where God's people can thrive.

Entrepreneurship Is...

So what is entrepreneurship? It's:

  • A marathon, not a sprint

  • Not for the weak

  • Freedom (when done right)

  • Character-revealing

  • Not for the selfish

  • Something to be done WITH God, not alone

  • Necessary for Kingdom advancement
